An Austrian cardinal has claimed “many Muslims” are trying to conquer Christian Europe, Independent UK reports.

“One must not take my homily to be a call to defend ourselves against the refugees, this was not at all my intention,” the cardinal said. He explained that Europe’s Christian legacy was “in danger,” but it was a self-inflicted problem. ~Cardinal Christoph Schönborn

Speaking at the 333rd anniversary of the Christian victory over Islamic forces at the Battle of Vienna, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn issued his warning at the Holy Name of Mary festival. “Will there be an Islamic conquest of Europe? Many Muslims want that and say: Europe is at the end,” he said.

After declaring this provocative warning, the archdiocesan website clarified that the Austrian cardinal was not attacking Muslims or refugees.

“One must not take my homily to be a call to defend ourselves against the refugees, this was not at all my intention,” the cardinal said. He explained that Europe’s Christian legacy was “in danger,” but it was a self-inflicted problem.

“We Europeans have squandered it,” he said. “That has absolutely nothing to do with Islam nor with the refugees. It is clear that many Islamists would like to take advantage of our weakness, but they are not responsible for it. We are.”

The Austrian government is considering declaring a state of emergency that would impose strict measures against Asylum seekers, including expulsion.
