Leaders in the US Christian community expressed dismay over UNESCO’s approval of a resolution that distorts Jerusalem’s religious history, The Algemeiner reports.
On October 13, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNSECO) passed a resolution that denied Jewish and Christian historical ties to the in Jerusalem.
UNESCO is the world body’s cultural organization. 24 members voted in favor of the resolution, 26 abstained, and six countries voted against the proposal. The proposal was put forth by the Palestinans and it condemned Israel on several issues related to Jerusalem and its holy sites.
David Brog, director of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), said, “The places under discussion, namely the Temple Mount, play a central role not only to the Jewish faith but also to the Christian faith. This resolution largely ignores and fails to honor this deep and holy connection.”
Several world leaders criticized the UNESCO resolution. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the resolution, suggesting that Israeli Jews do not have a culture connection with the Temple Mount, “is the same as saying that the Chinese do not have a link with the Great Wall or the Egyptians with the Pyramids.”
Even outgoing UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon expressed dismay on last week’s vote. “The Secretary-General reaffirms the importance of the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls for the three monotheistic religions and stresses the importance of the religious and historical link of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian peoples to the holy site,” his office said in a statement.
Meantime, Japan decided to withheld its annual dues to UNESCO to make sure that the UN body properly functions to foster trust among member nations.
