Category 4 storm Hurricane Harvey hit Texas on August 26, 2017 bringing fierce winds and heavy rain. It flooded the southeast part of the state, making Hurricane Harvey comparable to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Religious groups have been sending relief to victims of the devastating storm, Baptist News reports.
Christian organizations are preparing long-term recovery programs for those displaced by Hurricane Harvey.
Salvation Army already has 42 mobile kitchens and two field kitchens in flooded areas. Its website said, “The organization also has disaster leadership teams based in San Antonio, Galveston/Texas City, Houston and Corpus Christi — close to Rockport, where Hurricane Harvey made landfall.”
Samaritan’s Purse was already preparing supplies, even before the hurricane struck the Lone Star State. It has deployed two disaster relief crews on Friday, bringing with them emergency supplies and cleanup and recovery tools.
“Because we are volunteer based, we have no idea how big this response will be,” said Tim Haas, Manager of Disaster Relief. “I won’t be surprised at all to see people from all 50 states come to our sites to be a part of this response.”
Other Christian organizations are preparing long-term recovery programs for those displaced by Hurricane Harvey.
In a statement, Atlanta-based Cooperative Baptist Fellowship said, “CBF Disaster Response participates in networks seeking to help communities after a devastating event, but employs most of its resources on the long-term recovery, rehabilitation and resiliency of a community after first-responders have finished their work.”
Catholic dioceses and charities are also organizing relief operations to help in the aftermath of the hurricane. In addition to prayers, Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, head of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, called on people “to closely monitor future calls for assistance for victims and survivors in the days ahead.”
